Chengdu. We were told that there were two things not to miss in Chengdu, China: pandas and hotpot. We aimed to hit them both and anything else we could find. A modern and large city (8 million residents), Changdu is home to the world’s only and leading panda research centers. The goal of the visit was to have an experience with a panda that would never be forgotten and Chengdu delivered.
An early start to the day led to driving for over an hour to get to the Dujiangyan Panda Base. Here we would offer ourselves as volunteers for the day to work for the panda keepers. A quick rundown on rules and some very attractive coveralls then we were off. It was cold but the excitement of what was to come kept us all warm. The keepers had us clean some pens (scooping panda poop, gathering discarded bamboo, sweeping up) and break up bamboo.
The real thrill of the day was the close encounters with the pandas though. These come in the second half. Where we were able to feed panda bears and even sit and get a picture with one! No, it was not drugged. No it was not abused. And yes it was amazing.
Pandas are agressive by nature although they look cuddly. But as young pandas they are more docile and focused on food so it is not too hard to get a picture with one. But keep in mind that these animals are agressive so don’t try this at home!
After a cold day at the panda place a fun hot meal was in order, but first something different… Chinese opera!
What a fun experience! So different. It turned into a variety show which included all of the ancient arts of the Chinese: costume changing, shadow puppets, dancing, puppetry, singing, and a band. It was super fun.
By the time we were done it was time to eat and we found a close hot pot restaurant. Hot pot is very similar to fondu, but with Chinese herbs, meats, veggies, and of course hot chili sauce. You put the meats and veggies in the oils and broths to cook them. After the appropriate time you pull them out, dip them in a sauce and eat. It is so good! I can’t tell you how much I enjoy it! We need hot pot in the US, it’s amazing!

Great article! What an amazing experience with the pandas and thank you for letting us know, how the pandas were treated during your time there. That’s always a hit and miss especially in China.
They truly and obviously care very much for those animals.
I absolutely loved reading this article and the pictures are amazing. It’s so cool to see you interact with a panda. They’re incredible and I would jump at the chance to have that experience. This article and others give people a way to experience places they may never have an opportunity to visit.
