Looking for a romantic road trip full of beautiful views, exciting roads, historical significance and awe inspiring love stories?  Look no further than Romania.  The land that tourism forgot.  It used to be that when I thought of Romania I thought of sad people living in a run down, war torn, demolished country.  Well that opinion has changed and so should yours!  Here is quick guide for a romantic and fun road trip through this beautiful, warm, and inviting land. Fly or train to a medium sized town in western Romania called Timisoara.  Not much to attract you to this town except arrive,  get your rental car, and begin your road trip.  Before leaving town stop at and ATM and grab a little cash.  Although credit cards are widely accepted there are quite a few things you’re going to need cash for.  There will also be quite a few ATMs along the way if you need more cash.  You’re going to drive at this point to the east.  As you go you’ll get to start seeing the flat lands of the western side of this country.  Full of corn fields you can take in some very nice views on the modern highway leading you to the town of SIbiu.  But on the way you need to make a stop at what is considered by many to be one of the most fairy tale inspiring places in the world:  Corvin Castle.  This massive and beautiful castle is sure to begin your road trip with a bang.  Its classic Gothic architecture puts it down in history as one of the most romantic places on earth..  The inside hasn’t been restored and is something to see.  Don’t forget to go on the less taken path that leads under the drawbridge.  The best places for pictures of the castle are there.  The stream is a nice place to have a break and enjoy a snack or picnic.  Continue your drive to Sibiu, and if you have time look for the fortified church along the way.     Sibiu is another medium sized town in Romania.  But what you’re interested in is the Old Town Center.  There is a great and inexpensive place to stay just near the Old Town Center that boasts service and quality far beyond its low prices.  Hotel Republique is sure to impress with spacious rooms and an attentive staff but the best part is that this hotel is within walking distance of Old Town.  Just a few city blocks remain of the Old Town Center in Sibiu but they are absolutely worth a visit.  A small cathedral, old town hall, and other structures are just a few of the sights you’ll see here.  Absolutely worth the price of admission: ascending the tower of the town hall.  So many places to eat and shop along the streets here you might forget where you are.  If you head out of the Town Center to the north east you can find a fresh produce market (Cibin Market) worth a look.  Old Town really becomes amazing at night though, the lights and atmosphere truly are not to be missed. In the morning get up and enjoy a nice breakfast before heading off in your car on to the road that Top Gear called ‘the best driving road in the world’.  High praise in deed.  The road lives up to that praise.  Take your time winding in and out of the trees and around sharp corners while enjoying ever increasingly grand views.  As you approach the top, stop for a moment to enjoy the lake and look back over the twisty road.  Look around here for shepherds and their picturesque herds of sheep.  Grap a few street food snacks from the many vendors, and maybe even a souvenir or two as they aren’t poorly priced here.  Continue on the road and down the other side of the pass, enjoying the road, views and people as you go.  There are plenty of places to stop for pictures but don’t go too slow or you’ll miss the dam.  Above the dam you’ll find a cute little church.  Continue just past the dam and find yourself close to one of the most infamous places in history.  The real castle of Vlad the Impaler (also known as Dracula).  Its quite a few steps to get to see this small castle but worth it as the views are incredible (even in the rain).  Be aware that the area has seen increased bear activity of late so the schedule maybe off the day you visit.  After taking in the castle, move on down the road and pass through Bran (you’ll drive right by an amazing castle, but don’t worry you’ll get to see that one tomorrow).  Head to Maggies Ranch.  A fun little slice of Americana in the middle of Romania.  A western themed ranch with great hospitality and a fun atmosphere.  You’ll get your fill of country music there before getting a good nights rest. On the third day get up and grab a bite to eat.  You’re going to need it!  Hop in the car and head back to Bran to see the world famous Bran Castle.  Roumered to be the home of Vlad the Impaler there is only a little proof that he did in fact live here.  This castle, however, has more to offer than Vlad.  Your entry fee will take you on an amazing tour through this fully restored and maintained castle.  And while the views from the castle grounds are great, if you cross the street and head towards Inima Reginiei Maria (a memorial) you can find a small path that leads above it.  Follow this path to a rock out cropping with a cross in it and you’ll get the view you’ve been looking for.  Grab yourself some lunch and hop back into the car.  Next stop is seven ladders canyon.  If you have a little extra time you can stop at a very large fortress near Ransov as well, called Catatea Rasnov.  Seven Ladders Canyon is an incredable slot style canyon with seven ladders to help you get through it.  This area is beautiful and lush with vegetation.  The hike to get to the canyon is about 1.5 miles, and add on another 2 miles for the hike.  There is, however, a quick way down.  A zip line is there, although it isn’t for the faint of heart.  The lines can be quite fast and without breaking may get a little out of control.  After this long day you’ll head south towards Sinaia.  On the way don’t miss the amazing food at Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni.  But be aware that the traffic getting there can be kind of rough!   You are sure to enjoy this fine dining (at very reasonable prices) at this timeless classic.  Afterwards continue on to your next hotel… Caslelul Stirbey.  Not as luxurious as some of the other hotels, this hotel makes up for it by offering you the opportunity to stay in an historically significant hotel at very reasonable prices.  And the spiral stair case getting up to the rooms is always fun. Another early start begins with a good breakfast.  Jump in the car and head to Pele’s castle.  You have to pay to park but its worth it.  Give it a short hike up the road and you’ll be rewarded with one of the most spectacular castles.  The tour isn’t too expensive, but make sure you get in the line for the English tour.  If you have a little more time add the upstairs tour to your itinerary as it’s worth your time!  Enjoy the grounds a little and take a lot of pictures.  Its a beautiful place.  Head back into Sinaia and do a little shopping and grab a bite along the street there.  Try yourself a langos from one of the vendors there, they’re quite tasty.  After that get yourself into the car and head to Bucharest.  The drive isn’t the most beautiful but its easy.  Get yourself checked into the hotel and park the car underground at the hotel, it isn’t expensive and worth not trying to search out a close spot.  The hotel is called Hotel Cismigiu.  It has a long and storied past and is roumered to be haunted (one of the most haunted places in Romania and with Transylvania right there that’s saying something!).  The hotel is quite nice, and not expensive.  Its also within walking distance of old town and shopping areas.  For some locally produced goods you can head to ‘My Romanian Store‘ where the quality is high and the prices are fairly low.  Next door is an amazing ice cream place called Moritz Eis Ateneu.  Buy a cone and head off to old town (about a 30 min walk).  Here you can find some shops, historic old town, a few churches to view and don’t miss the umbrella alley way.  You’ll find something to eat here, and a lot of night life.  At this point just enjoy where you’ve been and the evening as the road trip is coming to a close.  Its a beautiful area full of life, street performers, and culture.  Enjoy! We hope you’ve enjoyed your road trip.  Its a very full 4 days but worth your time if you are there.  Enjoying all of these amazing places with someone you care for can be a romantic and beautiful adventure.  Hopefully this short trip has changed your thoughts on this amazing country.  One bit of advice you need to take with you though is that taking a trip to Romania should be high on your list before the rest of the world realizes how amaizing this area is!
