Some places are special because of the sights, some because of the food, and others because of the history. Kunming is one of the rare places made special not only by these things but also by the people. Kind hearted, happy, friendly, and helpful are all words that describe these beautiful people.
Kunming is called the spring city because the weather here is always nice. More sun than other cities in the west of China, Kunming’s mild winters invite the retired Chinese to be outdoors much of the time. They can often be seen dancing in the city park. Near the park is a local market dealing in all the foods and trappings of the area. A short walk away is the local temple which houses not only Buddhist but Taoist monks.
The temple is large and beautiful with a big portion built up on an island in the middle. Colorful and stunning architecture complete the temple. Kunming also has their own type of tea: Puer. Its similar in flavor to green tea but without any bitterness. It comes from a tree and can be kept for years. In fact, the older the tea is the more they value it.
Kunming’s food claim to fame are large rice noodles ordered in a large pot to which you can add an assortment of ingredients including quale eggs, pork, beef, cabbage, Chinese broccoli, carrots, and more exotic things such as beef organs, eyes, frog, fish, snouts and more. The noodles truly are fabulous and very tasty! Definitely worth a try. After dinner a walk along a well lit River rounded out an excellent day.
The stone forest is truly a geologist dream. Rocks shooting from the earth in many patterns and shapes. The park is not only interesting but exciting to explore. Paths lead all over the park and time to explore the could be between 2-4 hours. You are not allowed to explore off the path though, which I really wanted to do.
There is a very impressive overlook that offers a bird’s eye view of the park. Without a guide the map could become a little confusing. There are electric cars to take you to and from the entrance which are a good idea as it is about a mile. Overall totally worth going to and very fun to explore.
It would be remiss of me not to mention Maria the guide that showed us around Kunming. She was amazing and fun offering suggestions on where to go and what to do that made the trip more than a tour. Her local knowledge and ability to answer questions made her invaluable. But more than that her friendly nature and kind demeanor made a truly lasting impression. If you can find your way to her you won’t be disappointed. Ask her to take you to her friends tea shop 😉
