German-New Zealand accents are hard to understand. But we knew we could figure out what our guide wanted as she spouted off safety instructions. Underground Adventures is located on the west side of the south island, and is easily accessible. After a typical gearing up using Wetsuits fleece shirts and splash jackets we all filed into a van and off we went. It was a Bumpy Ride but we quickly made it out to the top of what looked like a steep Hill. After a brief session reminding us of our repelling skills as we stood at the edge of a large hole in the ground. A quick hook up to the Rope and down the hole we went!
The cave is well explored but not over used or touristy. Because of this and the way the guide lets you explore at times you may feel as through you are the first persons in the cave. Repelling down further we went deeper into the cavern. Scrambling over fallen rocks, squeezing through tight little holes just the size of my shoulders, and crawling through the underwater stream were among just a few of the fun experiences that we had.
The cave formations are amazing and plentiful. Only a few glow worms are found this deep in the cave though. After about 5 hours of playing underground in the mud suddenly there was daylight. As we slowly climbed out of the cave a true sense of accomplishment was earned. What a fun adventure! Only for those who are in shape, coordinated, and not claustrophobic. Very different than the waitomo caves as this is more of a raw caving experience.
